Jan Palach Private High School ltd.Founder: Pharming plc. and Michal MusilHeadmaster: Michal Musil Director of Studies: Josef Končel Secretarial Assistant: Lenka Musilová Jan Palach grammar school ltd. was established in 1991 and it soon became one of the first private schools in the country to be officially recognized by the Ministry of Education. Jan Palach grammar school (gymnázium in Czech) with a 4-year comprehensive study programme comprises 180 students in 8 classes. In the upcoming academic year of 2008/2009, we plan to open two classes, each comprising 20-22 students. Every year, a considerable number of our graduates successfully board on a wide range of university study programmes and find suitable jobs with high salaries. The teaching staff consists of highly-qualified and university-trained teachers. Our teaching plan is in accordance with the directives of the Ministry of Education for all four-year comprehensive grammar schools. Students are trained in science, humanities and visual arts. Based on the new Education Act no. 561/2004, we have adapted the number of lessons of subjects in question to fit the required standards and assist the students´ needs in view of the planned Equal School-Leaving Examination (equivalent of British A-levels). A fully equipped computer laboratory with unlimited Internet access is provided. Students take obligatory lessons in English and have a choice of either German or Spanish for their second obligatory foreign language. As of their third grade, they may take up a third foreign language. In their language classes, they are divided into groups according to the level of their language skills. From the second grade until the end of their studies, they also take conversation classes with a native speaker. This is currently Mike Giordano from the USA, a lawyer by profession and a highly communicative teacher, whose approach to students may be characterized as a blend of fatherly advice and a peer´s loyalty.Unfortunately Mike is leaving Czech Republic in August 2007 and therefore our school is seeking a new native speaker for the position of a teacher of conversation classes. In their third and fourth years, students can choose from a wide range of optional classes. This enables them to actively participate in the structuring of their individual study plans. Apart from the more conventional optional classes, courses of latin, music, realia of English speaking countries and essay writting, ecology, descriptive geometry, philosophy, economics, psychology, politology, cultural and social anthropology, regional history, law and IT are available. First round of entrance examinations for all secondary schools has been set for April 21, 2008. A student is accepted to Jan Palach programme as based on her/his results in the entrance examination, which is conducted in the form of an interview. The interviewer seeks to find out about the applicants´ language skills in English, German or Spanish and what their general knowledge is. The applicant may be asked some additional questions concerning mathematics and Czech. We would like to emphasize that an applicant's genuine interest in attending our school is a prerogative and the results from primary school are taken into consideration but need not be decisive. We will also take into account applicants´ results from The National Comparative Examination organised by SCIO foundation (www.scio.cz). A letter stating the headmaster's decision on acceptance or rejection of applicants will be delivered within 7 days after the interview and, simultaneously, the results will be posted on our website and on a notice board at the school. The participants´ results will be made public under confidential identification numbers. On previous arrangement, students may come to Jan Palach and consult their questions concerning oral entrance examination and study programme with the headmaster or director of studies every Monday between 4 and 6 p.m. Students of our school have a choice of extracurricular activities such as student exchange programmes, sightseeing tours abroad, the famed Schools in Nature (A unique opportunity for the students to get to know each other better, relax and/or play sports.), intensive sports courses, various outings in search of cinema, theatre and visual arts, and competitions. They may also join the Socrates – Comenius project as coordinators. After an age of waiting, endless negotiations and unsought-for postponements, the school has finally been moved from the old address at Senovážné náměstí, 17, to a new building in Pštrossova street ,13. Not only does this mean a dream fulfilled, as in our previous location we were in fact sharing the building with regular tenants, but it is also a definite improvement as to the level of noise and quality of the school´s environment. Jan Palach is currently located in a lovely and peaceful area in the little streets between Spálená street and the Vltava river. It overlooks a little park, has the English second-hand bookshop The Globe around the corner and a number of inspiring little cafés in close vicinity. The new building is another big step towards Jan Palach becoming a respected institution of European standards. All questions will be answered at our school office, our website or any of the above-mentioned telephone numbers. Application forms can be collected from our office or downloaded here XLS. Mgr.
